MASL 2 Welcomes Back the Return of the RGV Barracudas FC for the 2021-2022 Season
TAMPA, Fla. – The RGV Barracudas FC will make their return to the professional ranks when they return to the Major Arena Soccer League 2 for the 2021-22 season.
The Barracudas trace their history to their debut in the 2014-15 MASL season as the Brownsville Barracudas. After a one-year hiatus, the team came back as the RGV Barracudas FC for the 2018-19 MASL season, before going on hiatus again.
The team has been a proving ground for a number of current MASL stars including Florida Tropics Captain Victor Parreiras, a second team all MASL selection last year, and long-time teammate Ricardo Diegues, who until this season was the Tropics all-time leading goal scorer. Moises Gonzalez, the high-scoring forward for Utica City FC, is another alumni. He had 30 goals for the Barracudas in 2018-19. He banged in 23 for Utical last season.
Other stars who have suited up for RGV include Genoni Martinez, Efrain Martinez and Mitchell Cardenas.
“We’re thrilled to have RGV back on the playing field,” said M2 Commissioner Chris Economides. “They have a great history of having, literally, some of the best players in the game on their roster, so we know how committed they are to putting out a great product for fans in the ‘Valley.’ It’s a great step forward for M2 to be able to add them to the growing list of teams planning to play next season.”
Deputy Commissioner Andrew Ross says more announcements are expected in the coming weeks.
“This won’t be the only team coming back to the pro indoor soccer scene that has a proud history,” Ross said. “With the strongest structure in place ever for the game, those who have been involved in the sport previously are excited to get back on the pitch with us, as are a number of other cities and owners that are finalizing details to be part of the M2 excitement next winter.”
The league is currently conducting an abbreviated 2021 regular season, due to ongoing Covid-19 restrictions, with the Wichita Wings presently atop the standings. Announcements are planned soon for upcoming games in March and April. That information when it is released can be found at m2soccer.com, and on all the league’s social media plaforms.
