Week Nine: Showdowns in East, new coach makes Debut for New Mexico Runners
TAMPA, Florida -- Major Arena Soccer League 2 has three key games in the East Division to dominate most of the Week Nine action. But there is news in the West as well where the New Mexico Runners have a new coach.
The Runners will take to the floor with a new head coach this weekend after Steve Famiglietta, the only coach the Runners have had in their now six year history, stepped down. Replacing him is Brian Weems. A local soccer luminary who played at Sandia Prep during his high school years and at UNLV in college, Weems is currently also the Head Coach of the Rio Grande High School Boys Soccer team and has built a culture of team success leading his high school team to their first ever district title in 2024.
His resume features many key soccer coaching highlights including being named District High School Coach of the Year six times since 2007 during his coaching career which features Belen, Sandia, and Rio Grande High Schools. He will still continue to coach and work at Rio Grande High School.
Elsewhere, there's a big doubleheader in Utica -- part of back-to-back MASL and MASL 2 doubleheaders at the Adirondack Bank Center Saturday and Sunday -- and Spice City will heat up what has been a cold January in Danbury when they return to action Sunday.
