Wild last weekend leaves Wichita Wings top seed heading into M2's 'Championship Weekend'
TAMPA, Fla. -- In addition to deciding the final seedings for this weekend's Major Arena Soccer League 2 playoffs, the final weekend of the regular season in Amarillo showed once again that the championship will be very much up for grabs among the four teams that will travel to Wichita.
The Wings secured their first-place seeding with a 5-4 overtime win over Amarillo, and the Bombers claimed the third-seed with its 11-10 win over the Colorado Inferno as M2 concluded its regular season.
Wichita will now take on the Chicago Mustangs Saturday night at Hartman Arena in a 7 p.m. Central Standard Time start for the right to move on to Sunday's championship game. The Cleveland Crunch will play the Bombers at 3 p.m. Saturday at Hartman Arena to make up the other half of the finals. All games will be streamed live on the "For The Fans" network (ftfnext.com) which is also available on dozens of satellite and cable broadcast distributors.
The final weekend saw several amazing individual performances, including an eight-point effort from Colorado's Francisco Rivas (four goals, four assists) and a five-goal, one assist game from Amarillo's Vitor Patriani. Rivas lead the regular season in goals (29) assists (16) and total points (45) in 16 games. Patriani finished second overall in league scoring with 31 total points in 11 games.
"Those were two great games to set the stage for what should be a fantastic weekend in Wichita," Commissioner Chris Economides noted. "Those results, along with others we have all during the regular season, show just how balanced and competitive everyone has been. Truly, any of the four teams coming to Wichita this weekend have a chance to raise the championship trophy late Sunday afternoon at Hartman Arena. We'll have a true champion who earned their title by defeating two very good opponents."
